In the heart of the enchanting rolling meadows, dwelt a shepherd boy. His life was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His main role was to look after his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his main companions. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty scheme.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but here found no wolf.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
